WIC Infant Formula Update: August 1, 2025

At WIC, our top priority is the health and well-being of the families we serve. We want to let you know that beginning August 1, 2025, California WIC will begin offering Enfamil milk-based formulas and provide Similac soy-based formulas to eligible families.

As always, WIC encourages and supports breastfeeding as the best start for your baby. Breastmilk is specially made for your baby’s needs—it provides gentle, complete nutrition and helps protect your baby’s developing digestive system and overall health. We are here to support you in starting and continuing your breastfeeding journey with confidence.

We also understand that not all families breastfeed, and some may need or choose to use infant formula. It’s important to know that changing formula brands may affect your baby’s feeding routine. This is a normal adjustment for some infants, and your WIC team is here to help guide you through it.

Why is WIC making this change?

Each State WIC program has a contract for formula. When the contract is renewed, WIC is required to select the infant formula with the best contract price. This allows the State to serve more participants. With this latest change, CDPH/WIC has contracts with two different companies. Enfamil will be the milk based formula, and Similac will be the brand for soy based formula.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like breastfeeding support, please don’t hesitate to contact your local WIC office. We’re here to help you find the best solutions for your family’s unique needs. You can also visit myfamily.wic.ca.gov/Home/FormulaTransition for more information.

FAQ’s:

  • What if I try to make the change and my baby will not take a new formula?

    • Every baby is different. If you have concerns with how your baby is adjusting, talk to your baby’s pediatrician.

  • Will I see changes in my baby when making the switch to a new brand of formula?

    • It is not likely that you will see any changes because formula brands are similar. To ensure a smooth transition, be sure to prepare your baby’s formula exactly as directed on the container. When changing from one brand to another, you do not need to make any changes to how much or how often you have been feeding baby.

  • I have heard that my baby’s poop can be different on a new formula.

    • It is common to see changes in your baby’s poop. If you are concerned about any changes you see, talk to your baby’s pediatrician.

  • Why does my baby spit up more on the new formula?

    • It is possible that some babies may temporarily spit up more than usual when they change formulas. It’s because the new formula has a different taste than what they used to. It should get better over time, if spitting up seems to get worse, talk to your pediatrician.
